Is your phone ready for a travel eSIM?

Check the exact model, sales region, carrier restrictions, and provider support.

Check the phone you own before choosing a travel eSIM. The model name, its regional version, carrier restrictions, and the selected provider all matter. A list that names a phone family is a starting point, not a complete compatibility check.

Collect the right device details

In the phone's About settings, find the exact model or model number and software version. Note the country where the phone was bought and whether it came from a carrier. If you bought it secondhand, ask for the original model details rather than assuming it matches the version sold locally.

Use the manufacturer's support page for that exact version. Apple and Samsung both describe model or regional differences in their eSIM guidance. Read Apple's travel eSIM guidance and Samsung's eSIM setup guidance alongside the device documentation.

Check three separate questions

QuestionWhy it matters
Can this model store an eSIM?A phone-family name does not establish the regional hardware or software features
Can it use another carrier?A carrier lock can prevent use of a different provider
Does the selected plan support it?A device capability is not the same as approval for every provider or package

An Add eSIM menu is useful evidence of a device feature, but it does not answer all three questions. A displayed device identifier also does not override a carrier restriction.

Check carrier lock

On iPhone, check the carrier-lock status using Apple's instructions. Any restriction must be resolved with the carrier. Our carrier lock and regional-model guide gives the setting to inspect and the questions to prepare.

For other phones, use the manufacturer's instructions and ask the carrier if the lock status is unclear. Buying a separate travel eSIM does not unlock the device.

Confirm the features you need during the trip

A compatible eSIM profile may still be a poor choice for your intended setup. If you need two active lines, ordinary calls, or laptop tethering, check those capabilities separately. See hotspot, calls, and SMS.

When contacting support, provide the model number, software version, purchase region, and the plan you are considering. Share sensitive device identifiers only through the provider's private support channel when needed.

Once those checks are complete, follow the iPhone or Android setup guide. Keep the selected plan's own instructions beside you throughout installation.
