Choosing an eSIM for a trip to China

Check mainland China coverage, essential app access, phone compatibility, and activation terms before choosing a travel eSIM.

Start your China eSIM comparison with the services you need during the trip. A working mobile connection is only part of the decision. You also need to know whether your chosen plan supports the apps you rely on, whether your phone can use it, and which destinations the package includes.

Check each stop on your itinerary

If your journey includes mainland China, Hong Kong, or Macao, look for each destination in the plan's coverage list. Do the same for an onward stop elsewhere in Asia. Treat every border crossing as a coverage check rather than assuming a nearby destination is included.

Compare a mainland-only package with a regional option using your actual travel dates. A regional package is useful only if its listed destinations, allowance, and validity fit the whole route. Check whether the data is shared across the trip or divided by destination or day.

Ask about the apps you will use

List the services you need for work, communication, navigation, and bookings. Ask the provider about those specific services under the selected plan. An eSIM label alone does not guarantee access to every app or website, and a description such as "roaming data" is not a promise that a VPN is unnecessary.

Download essential documents and any available offline resources before departure. Complete app registration while you can still receive the verification messages you need. Keep a copy of accommodation addresses and booking details that does not require a new login to open.

If an app needs an SMS code, identify the number that must receive it. Check with your home carrier about keeping that line available abroad and any charges. Use the calls, SMS, and hotspot guide to separate those requirements from your mobile data allowance.

Verify the exact phone

Use the model number and purchase region when checking compatibility. Do not infer eSIM support from the phone's brand or from another device with a similar name. Our compatibility guide explains what to check with the manufacturer and provider.

If you use an iPhone, follow Apple's carrier-lock check and ask the carrier to resolve any restriction before purchasing a travel plan.

Choose the allowance and start time together

Estimate the data you will use away from Wi-Fi, including uploads and laptop use if those are part of your trip. The data planning guide helps you turn those habits into an allowance to compare.

Before installing, confirm the event that starts validity, the installation deadline, and the required roaming or APN settings. Follow the provider's instructions for that package. Read the activation guide, then use the China eSIM page to review your destination requirements alongside the plan details.
